In a year-long trial, older adults who walked briskly a few times a week actually grew the brain's memory center, while a comparison group that only stretched kept shrinking. The move is to treat aerobic exercise as memory training, starting with about forty minutes of brisk walking three times a week.

The study, published in PNAS in 2011, randomized around 120 older adults for a full year. The aerobic walking group increased the volume of the hippocampus, the seahorse-shaped memory hub, by roughly two percent, effectively rolling back one to two years of age-related loss.

Navy divers should have the world’s worst teeth. But they don’t. Why?

Because, despite the risk of cracked, broken, and loose teeth, which comes from the intense underwater pressure they endure and the nasty tears on their gums from the mouthpiece…

All you need is your finger and a little bit of salt.

After which, you’ll be able to stop gum bleeding, tooth decay, and bad breath... Even if everything else you’ve tried (so far) has failed.

That structural change was not cosmetic. It tracked with better performance on memory tasks and with higher levels of BDNF, a protein that supports the growth and survival of brain cells.

The target matters here. The hippocampus is among the first regions to shrink with age and in Alzheimer's, so a form of exercise that shores it up is aimed at exactly the vulnerable spot.

Keep the claim calibrated. This was a solid but moderate-sized trial, and later studies of exercise and thinking scores have been mixed, so read growing your memory center as promising rather than a guaranteed shield against dementia.

The protocol is refreshingly ordinary. Build to around forty minutes of brisk walking three times a week, at a pace that leaves you a little breathless but still able to talk.

Give it time, because the brain did not change overnight. The gains built over months of consistency, which makes this a habit to hold for a year, not a week.

For you, this is one of the more concrete brain moves there is. Women carry higher dementia risk, and here is a specific, unglamorous protocol shown to reshape the memory center itself.

Aerobic exercise is memory training you can start on foot. Walk briskly forty minutes, three times a week, and give your hippocampus a full year to answer.
